Intern Application and Information

Temporary Provision for Background Checks

Pursuant to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order No. 130, Section 3, the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners ("Board") has been authorized to waive or modify regulatory licensure requirements temporarily for persons that meet certain qualifications, where those licensure requirements would prevent or impair allowing those persons to provide care. This licensure application waiver and modification is temporary and is effective only until June 26, 2020, unless Executive Order Nos. 130 and 139 are further extended with a superseding Executive Order.

As part of the standard licensure process for dentists, dental hygienists, and interns, the Board’s regulations require a background check through the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation ("SBI"). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SBI and certain other agencies and organizations that customarily perform services in association with background checks have temporarily ceased certain operations, including preparation of fingerprint cards and use of Live Scan.

As a result, to further the goal of licensure of qualified persons to provide the needed care to the North Carolina public, the Board temporarily is waiving the requirement in its rules listed below that applicants submit fingerprint cards for a background check through the SBI. As of April 20, 2020, and through the effective date of Executive Order No. 130, the Board will conduct the required background check through Castle Branch, Inc.

During this time frame, applicants will not need to submit fingerprint cards as part of their applications but may have to submit a signed release of information form authorizing the Board to request a criminal history record check from Castle Branch, Inc. There will be no change in the fee charged to applicants as a result of this modification.

This licensure application waiver and modification is temporary and is effective only until June 7, 2020, unless Executive Order No. 130 is rescinded, replaced, or extended with a superseding Executive Order.

Please note that once your application is received by the Board office, the process takes at least 90 days.
