license renewal

The renewal period for 2024 is now open! The online renewal system is open from November 1 to March 31 each year. A $50 late penalty will be assessed to those renewing after January 31.

Beginning in 2011, we no longer offer paper renewal. You must enter the system to complete your renewal paperwork.  You will be offered several options for making payment, but we will only accept renewal information that has been entered online. Payment by check must be received by close of business on or before deadline.

Beginning 2016, we no longer mail renewal certificates. You may print your certificate immediately after renewing. Choose the option "Print Certificate" while logged in. Duplicates may be printed at any time for no charge.

To print a receipt or your certificate, you will need to have access to a printer. Please keep this in mind if using smart phones or tablets to renew.

General Information
  • All licensed dentists and dental hygienists must renew their licenses annually. The law requires renewal with proper payment by January 1 of each year, but licenses may be renewed until January 31st without penalty fee for renewal of any license. After January 31st, the Board is required to charge a $50.00 penalty fee for renewal of any license. This penalty fee may not be waived by the Board.

  • All licenses that are not renewed by March 31 become void and continuing to practice without a valid renewal certificate is a Class I misdemeanor. Each day's violation is a separate offense.

  • Renewal fees for 2024 are $329.00 for dentists and $106.00 for hygienists

  • As of 2016, we no longer mail renewal certificates for dental and dental hygiene. You may now print your own for no charge immediately after renewing. Log into the system, choose "Print Certificate" from the menu and follow the prompts.

  • If you hold a DEA license and prescribing privileges in North Carolina, there are extra requirements for renewal. You must have taken a course including at least one hour on the prescribing of opioids, and you must be registered with the NC Controlled Substance Reporting System. Info on both of these requirements may be found on our What's New page.

  • Licenses not renewed by March 31 must be reinstated by the Board. Reinstatement involves submitting an application and paying a reinstatement fee ($225 for dentists; $60 for dental hygienists) along with the current year's renewal fee. Applications below.

  • If you are being audited for CE, you will be unable to renew online until we have processed your CE paperwork. Please allow 2 weeks processing time after you submit your paperwork before attempting online renewal or contacting our office.

  • If you hold an anesthesia or sedation permit, you will need to renew it as a separate transaction. See below!
